In the process of producing paper cups, it involves a choice of using single-coated paper or double-coated paper. The core competitiveness of paper cup machines lies not only in production efficiency, but also in the ability to adapt to material properties. As the core material for paper cup production, the difference between single-coated and double-coated processes directly affects the marketing of finished products and equipment selection. As a paper cup machine manufacturer, BTM will explain the difference between single-coated and double-coated paper and how to choose the appropriate single-coated and double-coated paper.

What Is PE Coated Paper?

Ordinary paper is made of wood fiber and has strong water absorption. Ordinary paper absorbs moisture and is afraid of moisture. Soaking it in water will wet the paper and make it unusable. The paper liner for making paper cups needs to be waterproof. Therefore, PE coated paper is needed for making paper cups. This kind of paper is made by using a laminating machine to heat-melt PE plastic and evenly coat it on the surface of the paper to form a very thin film. Because it is hot-melted on the surface of the paper, it is firmly bonded and not easy to separate. Paper that is laminated on one side is single-laminated paper, and paper that is laminated on both sides is double-laminated paper.

Single VS Double-Sided Coated Paper Cup

Single-sided PE coated paper cup: Paper cups produced with single-sided PE coated paper are called single-sided PE paper cups. Single-sided coated paper cups only have PE film on the inside, which can effectively insulate and prevent liquid leakage. Therefore, this type of paper cup is often used to produce room temperature cups and hot drink cups.

Double-sided PE coated paper cup: Both the inside and outside of the paper cup have PE coating. The double-sided coating process can effectively prevent condensation from causing the cup body to soften and improve the stiffness of the cup body. Therefore, double-sided PE coated paper cups are more suitable for low-temperature scenarios such as cold drink cups and ice cream packaging.

The cost of single coating is lower and suitable for cost-sensitive users; double-coated paper is more expensive than single-coated paper due to its complex process and more materials. However, the compression resistance and durability of double-coated paper are significantly improved, especially suitable for high-end paper cup machine production lines.
